Softball Recap: Merrillville Drops Season-High Score on Calumet New Tech

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Merrillville). They put the hurt on the Calumet New Tech Warriors with a sharp 30-12 win on Monday. The high-scoring effort was just what the Pirates needed considering they were shut out in their previous match.

The team relied heavily on Alaysia Haney, who got on base in five of her six plate appearances with four stolen bases, four runs, and five RBI. Those five RBI gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Adrianna McDonald, who got on base in all four of her plate appearances with three stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI.

Merrillville kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 4.7 hits per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 contests they've averaged 11.

Merrillville's victory ended a six-game drought on the road and puts them at 3-21. As for Calumet New Tech, they are on a 24-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-10.

Looking ahead, Merrillville will be playing at home against Chesterton at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Pirates' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Trojans have averaged an impressive 7.9 runs per game this season. As for Calumet New Tech, they will venture away from home to challenge East Chicago Central at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
