Softball Recap: Ponchatoula Wins Going Away Against Covington

Ponchatoula had to skate by with only a one-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the 11-run drubbing they dealt Covington on Thursday. The Ponchatoula Green Wave were the clear victor by a 17-6 margin over the Covington Lions. The victory continues a trend for the Green Wave in their matchups with the Lions: they've now won nine in a row.

Abby Dagro made a splash while hitting and pitching. She struck out 13 batters over seven innings while giving up four earned (and two unearned) runs off eight hits. With that strong performance, she is now averaging an impressive 5.3 strikeouts per game. She was also big at the plate, going 4-for-6 with four RBI and two doubles. That's the most hits she has posted since back in February.

In other batting news, Ponchatoula let Faye Boihem and Rae'El Wheat run wild. Boihem scored three runs while going 3-for-5, while Wheat scored three runs while going 4-for-5. Those three runs gave Boihem a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Paityn Lancaster, who scored two runs while going 2-for-4.

Ponchatoula always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .551. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their OBP total in five consecutive matches.

Ponchatoula now has a winning record of 10-9. As for Covington, their loss ended a 13-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 11-3.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Ponchatoula will host Mobile Christian at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Covington, they will be playing at home against Mandeville on Tuesday.
