Baseball Recap: Coronado Comes Up Short

Coronado had lost four straight on the road, but on Thursday they dropped their record down to 7-15 to make it five. They came up short against the Canon City Tigers, falling 10-0. The shutout was out of character for the Cougars seeing as the last time the team failed to score was back in March.

As for Canon City, they are on a roll lately: they've won eight of their last ten matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 13-8 record this season. The result was nothing new for Canon City, who have now won seven contests by six runs or more so far this season.

For Canon City's part, Zeke Martinez made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out seven over five innings pitched. Martinez has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in nine consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with four RBI. Those two hits gave him a new career-high.

In other batting news, Canon City got a massive performance out of Justin Loveless, who got on base in all three of his plate appearances with two runs, one triple, and two RBI. That's the most runs Loveless has posted since back in March. Another player making a difference was Peter Hershberger, who got on base in all three of his plate appearances with three runs and one stolen base.

While Coronado had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 4:00 p.m. on Friday.
