Basketball Game Preview: Coronado Islanders vs. Madison Warhawks

Coronado and Madison are an even 5-5 against one another since January of 2016, but not for long. The Coronado Islanders will welcome the Madison Warhawks at 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty point totals in their previous games.

Last Friday, Coronado was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap as they fell 67-63 to Point Loma. While losing is never fun, the Islanders can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 617th, while the Pointers are ranked 293rd).

Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Madison, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Tuesday. They enjoyed a cozy 76-62 victory over Mira Mesa on Friday. The Warhawks pushed the score to 60-34 by the end of the third, a deficit the Marauders cut but never quite recovered from.

Madison's win came from a few key players Coronado will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Runnar(Rj) Miller, who dropped a double-double on 21 points and 14 boards. That's the most points he has posted since back in December of 2024. Another player making a difference was Jorge Luque, who almost dropped a double-double on 13 points and nine rebounds.

Coronado has traveled a rocky road recently having lost 12 of their last 15 games, which put a noticeable dent in their 10-14 record this season. As for Madison, they pushed their record up to 17-7 with the win, which was their fourth straight at home.
