Softball Recap: Monday's Win Is Melbourne's Eighth in Last Nine Outings

Salem typically has all the answers at home, but on Monday Melbourne proved too difficult a challenge. They came out on top against the Greyhounds by a score of 6-1 (the very same score they lost by in their prior game). The game was the first time the Bearkatz have beaten the Greyhounds on their field since April 28, 2023.

Kallie Thornton spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on five hits and racked up eight Ks. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than eight strikeouts in four consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Adyson Gunther was excellent, going 2-for-4 with two RBI, one run, and one double. The team also got some help courtesy of Maggie Pierson, who went 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI.

Melbourne hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Salem struck out ten times.

Melbourne has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won eight of their last nine matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 12-5 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.6 runs on average over those games. As for Salem, their loss ended a six-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 13-2.

Melbourne didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next contest, a 15-5 win against Midland on the 22nd. As for Salem, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Flippin at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Bobcats have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed seven runs per game on average), something the Greyhounds will no doubt try to take advantage of.
