McAllen Memorial extended their winning streak to five on Thursday, bumping them up to 6-2. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past the Vela Sabercats 31-28. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Mustangs have posted since October 11, 2024.

Jayden Soliz had another great game (as he tends to do), rushing for 205 yards and two TDs while picking up 12.8 yards per carry. Those 205 rushing yards gave him a new career-high. Another back making a difference was Braxton Speights, who rushed for 81 yards and one touchdown.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: McAllen Memorial was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 331 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 219 rushing yards every time they've taken the field this season.

As for Vela, they moved to 6-2 with that defeat, which also ended their five-game winning streak. The defensive woes were uncharacteristic for they, who until this game were averaging nine points allowed.

When it comes to explaining why Vela lost, don't look at Tyler Ruiz. Despite the final result, he threw for 170 yards and three TDs on only 15 passes.

We've got plenty of inter-district action coming up soon. McAllen Memorial is set to take on their familiar foe Rowe at 7:30 p.m. on the 31st. The two teams might be coming in a bit winded given these two teams combined for 830 yards in their previous games. Meanwhile, Vela will face off against rival Palmview at 7:30 p.m. on the 31st.
