Basketball Recap: Vero Beach Comes Up Short

If Vero Beach was riding high fresh off their 51-20 takedown of Morningside Academy last Monday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The match between the Vero Beach Indians and the Cocoa Tigers didn't end well, with the Vero Beach Indians falling 60-45. While losing is never fun, the Indians can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 274th, while the Tigers are ranked 129th).

Despite the defeat, Vero Beach saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Ekklesia Anderson went 9 for 18 on her way to 28 points. That was a full 62.2% of Vero Beach's points, marking the third time in a row she's posted more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Jazmyn Morris, who had three points and 12 boards.

Even though they lost, Vero Beach smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in six consecutive contests.

Vero Beach's loss dropped their record down to 3-8. As for Cocoa, with the victory, they broke their four-game losing streak and moved their record to 10-5.

Vero Beach will challenge Jensen Beach at 6:30 p.m. on Monday. As for Cocoa, they will face off against Astronaut at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. Cocoa is facing Astronaut at the right time seeing as Astronaut is stuck on a six-game losing streak.
