Basketball Recap: Capital Prep Comes Up Short

Capital Prep lost against Academy of Science and Innovation back in January of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Tuesday. The Capital Prep Trailblazers took a blow against the Academy of Science and Innovation Ravens, falling 72-32. The Trailblazers were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 50-17.

Javaris Spencer and Syre Gillespie certainly did their best on Tuesday to avoid the loss. Spencer dropped a double-double on 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Gillespie posted eight points in addition to five rebounds and three steals. Spencer has been hot recently, having posted 11 or more boards the last three times he's played. Another player making a difference was Mha'Nye March, who put up three points.

Even though they lost, Capital Prep smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 15 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive rebounds in eight consecutive contests dating back to last season.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Academy of Science and Innovation to victory, but perhaps none more so than Mohammad Kulaib, who went 5 of 10 on his way to 11 points in addition to seven assists and six steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Wilbert Franco, who went 5 of 7 on his way to 13 points.

Capital Prep's defeat dropped their record down to 1-5. As for Academy of Science and Innovation, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 4-1.

Capital Prep wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, a 72-49 loss against CREC [Computer Science and Engineering/Academy] on the 10th. As for Academy of Science and Innovation, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 62-31 win against Bulkeley on the 9th.
