Softball Game Preview: Apex Cougars vs. Fuquay - Varina Bengals

Apex hasn't had much luck against Fuquay - Varina recently, but that could start to change on Wednesday. The Apex Cougars will face off against the Fuquay - Varina Bengals at 6:00 p.m. Both come into the matchup bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

While Cougars fans will have to keep waiting for their team to come home, they shouldn't be too worried about the road trip considering the result of Wednesday's season opener. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 9-8 win over Union Pines on Wednesday.

Addie Louder and Maggie Austin did most of the damage at the plate: Louder went 2-for-3 with one home run, three runs, and one double, while Austin went 3-for-4 with one home run, one stolen base, and two RBI. Those three hits gave Austin a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Lauren McMahon, who scored a run while going 2-for-3.

Meanwhile, Fuquay - Varina entered their tilt with Holly Springs on Tuesday with two consecutive wins , and they'll enter their next game with three. They came out on top against the Golden Hawks by a score of 5-1.

Kylie McGrogan spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on four hits.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Chloe Webb, who scored a run while going 2-for-3. Another player making a difference was Emma Peacock, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Apex skirted past Fuquay - Varina 7-6 when the teams last played back in March of 2024. The rematch might be a little tougher for Apex since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
