Sock wins Junior U.S. Open tennis title

After winning several national championships, three-time defending Class 6A singles champion Jack Sock brings home international success; Phillipsburg ends Smith Center's streak.

After winning the Junior U.S. Open tennis title last week, Blue Valley North (Overland Park) senior Jack Sock couldn't wait to get his hands on the tournament's trophy.

"That's probably the coolest trophy I've ever won," Sock told the Lincoln Journal Star following his 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 win over Denis Kudla. "When I saw that, I was pretty excited to hold it."

Sock, who also played mixed doubles at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y., earned entrance into the tournament by taking home the top prize at the USTA National 18s Championships in Kalamazoo, Mich.

Sock became the first American to win the title since Andy Roddick claimed the championship in 2000. He went 6-0 in the junior portion of the tournament.

ANOTHER STREAK FALLS FOR REDMEN
Norton was the last team to do it in 2003. Now it was Phillipsburg's turn.

Sean Newlan sealed the deal for the Panthers when he connected with Sheldyne Brown from 19 yards out in the fourth quarter Friday, securing a 19-14 regular season win over Smith Center and marking the end of an era of futility for Redmen opposition.

Smith Center's 79-game winning streak came to a halt last November when Centralia edged the Redmen 20-12 in the Class 2-1A state championship game. By edging the Redmen last weekend, the Panthers stopped the Mid-Continent Conference football power’s regular season winning streak, putting the skids on another Smith Center streak for the second time in three games.

Phillipsburg lost to Smith Center, which moved up to Class 3A this season, six times since 2004 before getting Friday’s win. From 2004-07, the Redmen went 4-0 against Phillipsburg, outscoring the Panthers 191-29. Phillipsburg lost to the Redmen in 2008 and 2009, as well, but by only a 50-35 margin of victory collectively.

Truitt Kuhlmann opened the game's scoring in the first quarter with a 1-yard plunge. But Phillipsburg came back on the arm of Newlan, who tossed second quarter touchdown strikes of 20 and 39 yards to Matt Schneider and Seth Derr respectively to earn a 13-6 advantage at intermission.

Zach Eaton put the Redmen back on top 14-13 in the third quarter with a 31 yard run, before Newlan’s fourth quarter strike to Brown.

OAKLEY GETS RATH WIN NO. 100
Levi Hefner and Nate Cox scored two touchdowns apiece as Oakley football coach Randall Rath claimed his 100th win in a 38-0 blanking of Sublette. Hefner scored on runs of 39 and 19 yards. Cox hauled in a 29-yard strike from Plainsmen signal caller Patrick Loftus and scored on a 19-yard run. Kody Gabel rounded out the scoring with a 39-yard romp.
