Basketball Recap: Layton Christian Academy Takes a Loss

Layton Christian Academy easily dispatched Providence Hall last Tuesday, but unfortunately both the margin and the ultimate result were a different story in this one. The Layton Christian Academy Eagles fell just short of the Juan Diego Catholic Soaring Eagle by a score of 42-40 on Thursday. The Eagles were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Soaring Eagle earlier this season, when they won 44-31.

When it comes to explaining why Layton Christian Academy lost, don't look at Fabiana Lopez. Despite the final result, she dropped a double-double on 12 points and ten steals. The dominant performance gave Lopez a new career-high in steals. Beatrice Bombazar also deserves some recognition as she grabbed her first steal of the season.

Even though they lost, Layton Christian Academy smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive boards in four consecutive contests.

Juan Diego Catholic got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Olivia Fry out in front who posted six points in addition to seven boards and five steals. Fry has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last three times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Ayen Kuath, who earned nine points and seven rebounds.

Layton Christian Academy's loss dropped their record down to 12-9. As for Juan Diego Catholic, the win was the third in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 8-13.

Layton Christian Academy has already played their next match (against Summit Academy), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing. Juan Diego Catholic will venture away from home to challenge Judge Memorial Catholic at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Judge Memorial Catholic has been dominant on offense recently, having racked up an incredible 205 points over their last three games.
