Softball Game Preview: Willcox Cowboys vs. Mica Mountain Thunderbolts

The Willcox Cowboys will take on the Mica Mountain Thunderbolts at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Both teams are coming into the contest red-hot, with Willcox sitting on six straight victories and Mica Mountain on three.

Last Friday, Willcox made easy work of St. Augustine Catholic and carried off a 21-5 win. The result was nothing new for the Cowboys, who have now won nine matches by six runs or more so far this season.

Alyssa Gonzalez was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, scoring a run while going 2-for-2. What's more, she posted two RBI, the most she's had over her last 11 games.

In other batting news, Nataly Thompson was incredible, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, three runs, and three RBI. That home run marked the first that she launched this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Emma McWilliams, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-2.

Willcox was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .656. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .304 or higher in seven consecutive contests.

Meanwhile, Mica Mountain posted their closest victory since March 11th on Monday. They had just enough and edged out Walden Grove 5-4.

Willcox pushed their record up to 13-7 with the win, which was their third straight on the road. The road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 16.3 runs over those games. As for Mica Mountain, their win bumped their record up to 12-9.
