Softball Recap: Carmi-White County Bulldogs vs. Edwards County Lions
Carmi-White County extended their losing streak to three on Thursday, dropping their season record down to 5-7 in the process. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost an 8-7 heartbreaker at the hands of the Edwards County Lions. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Lions this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 8-2 on Tuesday.
Mia Evans was cooking despite her team's loss, going 3-for-4 with three RBI, one run, and one double. Caroline Simmons was another key player, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with three runs and one stolen base.
As for Edwards County, the win was the 11th in a row for them, bringing their record up to 11-1. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.5 runs over those games.
On Edwards County's side, Allison Groff spent all eight innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and five unearned) runs on five hits and racked up seven Ks. Groff has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in four consecutive appearances.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Grace Bishop, who fired off two home runs, three runs, and four RBI while going 2-for-3. Those two home runs gave her a new career-high. Lily Jones also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen base of the season.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Carmi-White County will take on Eldorado at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Edwards County, they will face off against Gibson Southern at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
