Basketball Recap: Monroe Academy Starts off Right with Win over Sparta Academy

Monroe Academy gave their fans exactly what they wanted out of a home opener on Saturday. They strolled past the Sparta Academy Warriors with points to spare, taking the game 37-23. This was payback for the Volunteers, who suffered a 41-31 defeat the last time these two teams met.

Sparta Academy lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Carly Gauna, who posted five points along with 11 rebounds and four steals. The dominant performance gave Gauna a new career-high in boards. The team also got some help courtesy of Caroline Hildreth, who had nine points.

Sparta Academy has traveled a rocky road recently having lost four of their last five games, which put a noticeable dent in their 2-5 record this season.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Monroe Academy will have some time to savor their victory since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Sparta Academy at 6:00 p.m. on January 24, 2025. As for Sparta Academy, they will head out to square off against Edgewood Academy at 6:00 p.m. on Monday.
