Basketball Recap: Fatuma Abdi's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Garrett Morgan over Rhodes

Garrett Morgan easily dispatched Collinwood last Tuesday, but unfortunately both the margin and the ultimate result were a different story in this one. The Garrett Morgan Falcons fell just short of the Rhodes Rams by a score of 51-48 on Thursday. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Falcons of the 45-36 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in January.

Garrett Morgan lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Fatuma Abdi, who dropped a double-double on 12 points and 15 rebounds. Abdi continues to improve, besting her previous point total in each of the last four games she's played. Another player making a difference was Raiin Kelly, who dropped a double-double on 12 points and 12 boards.

Even though they lost, Garrett Morgan smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 20 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 15 offensive rebounds in four consecutive matchups.

Garrett Morgan now has a losing record at 3-4. As for Rhodes, their win was their sixth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 5-1.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Garrett Morgan will get a bit of extra time to process the defeat as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Christian Community at 5:00 p.m. on January 3, 2025. Christian Community will roll in looking for their fifth straight victory, something Garrett Morgan surely won't give up without a fight. Rhodes will also get a bit of a break before their next contest: they'll face off against Bard Early College at 7:00 p.m. on January 7, 2025.
