Softball Recap: Lugoff-Elgin's Losing Streak Is a Thing of the Past

Lugoff-Elgin came into Thursday's match having lost six straight, but that streak is now in the rearview. They walked away with a 5-2 win over the Sumter Gamecocks on Thursday. This was a revenge game for the Demons: when they faced off against the Gamecocks last Tuesday, they had to take a 2-1 defeat.

Cassie Merriweather spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned runs on eight hits.

At the plate, Haley Starcher and Carley Bell did most of the damage at the plate: Starcher went 1-for-3 with one home run, while Bell went 1-for-3 with one home run and three RBI. The dominant performance gave Bell a new career-high in RBI. Paydon Spires also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.

They weren't the only ones working in the home run department: Lugoff-Elgin lost a few balls and finished the game with two home runs. That's the most home runs they've managed all season.

Lugoff-Elgin's victory was their first in the region, bumping their region record up to 1-3 and their overall record up to 3-8. As for Sumter, their loss was their first in the region, dropping their region record down to 3-1 and their overall record down to 8-4-1.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Lugoff-Elgin will square off against Camden at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. Lugoff-Elgin is facing Camden at the right time seeing as Camden is stuck on a four-game losing streak. As for Sumter, they will head out to take on West Florence at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average, (West Florence 2.9, Sumter 3.3) so any runs scored will be well earned.
