Baseball Recap: Lincolnton Puts Losing Streak Behind Them

Lincolnton's game on Tuesday was a loss, but they didn't let that memory haunt them on Wednesday. They put the hurt on the Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy Gryphons with a sharp 22-11 win. The victory was a breath of fresh air for the Wolves as it put an end to their seven-game losing streak.

Devin Leonard and Karson Cloninger made a big impact no matter where they played. On the mound, Leonard tossed four innings while giving up just two earned (and seven unearned) runs off four hits. Meanwhile, Cloninger pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Lincolnton is 2-1 when Cloninger allows one or fewer hits, but 3-10 otherwise. At bat, Leonard scored a run while going 2-for-5, while Cloninger went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, four RBI, and one run. Those four RBI gave Cloninger a new career-high.

In other pitching news, Noah Eaker looked comfortable as he pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two hits in four consecutive appearances.

Back at the plate, Peyton Grooms was a standout: he scored two runs while going 5-for-6. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in RBI (three). Yorye Urena was another key player, scoring four runs and stealing three bases while going 2-for-5.

Lincolnton always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .549. They are a perfect 3-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.

Lincolnton's record now sits at 5-11. As for Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy, they are on a six-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-10.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Lincolnton will face off against West Caldwell at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. The Warriors have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 13 runs per game on average), something the Wolves will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy, they will take on Shelby at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
