Football Recap: Berthoud Comes Up Short

After flying high against Weld Central two weeks ago, Berthoud came back down to earth. The game between the Spartans and the Coronado Cougars didn't end well, with the Spartans falling 40-22. The Spartans were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Cougars apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in September of 2024.

Despite the loss, Berthoud still got an impressive performance from Jayce Newbill, who picked up 115 receiving yards and a pair of TDs. Newbill's receiving production has been exceptional recently as that marked his third straight game with at least 115 receiving yards.

It was another big night for Thomas Buckmiller, who threw for 309 yards and three touchdowns while completing 73.9% of his passes, and also punched in a pair of scores on the ground for Coronado. Those 26 rushing yards gave Buckmiller a new career-high. Christian Pabon helped out on the ground, rushing for 86 yards.

Berthoud's loss dropped their record down to 2-2. As for Coronado, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 3-2.

Looking ahead, Berthoud will head out on the road to take on Wellington at 6:30 p.m. on October 3. The Spartans will need to watch out since the Eagles have now posted at least 31 points every time they've taken the field this season. As for Coronado, they will have some time to savor their win since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Pueblo County at 7:00 p.m. on October 10. The Cougars will need to watch out since the Hornets have now posted at least 31 points every time they've taken the field this season.
