Football Game Preview: Matanzas Pirates vs. Mount Dora Hurricanes + How To Watch

Two dominant backs in Wiley Conner and Tymir Gaines are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Matanzas Pirates will welcome the Mount Dora Hurricanes at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.

On Thursday, Matanzas lost to Mainland on the road by a 34-17 margin. The Pirates haven't had much luck with the Buccaneers recently, as the team has come up short the last seven times they've met.

Matanzas' loss came about despite a quality game from Thomas Larywon, who picked up 72 receiving yards and two TDs.

Matanzas didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Jezeriah Mccoy and Cooper May. May is also on a roll when it comes to total tackles, as he's now made five or more in each of the last 13 games he's played dating back to last season.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Mount Dora). They simply couldn't be stopped on Friday as they easily beat Lake Highland Prep 49-14. With the Hurricanes ahead 35-7 at the half, the game was all but over already.

Matanzas' defeat dropped their record down to 3-3. As for Mount Dora, their win (their first of the season) made their record 1-4.

Matanzas took a serious blow against Mount Dora in their previous matchup back in October of 2024, falling 36-0. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of Gaines, who rushed for 70 yards and three touchdowns. Now that the Pirates know the damage he can cause, will they be able to stop him this time? There's only one way to find out.
