Cardinal Newman wins going away against Midland Valley

The third road match was the charm for the Cardinal Newman Cardinals, as they earned their first road win of the season. They strolled past Midland Valley with points to spare on Sunday, taking the game 55-37.

Cardinal Newman got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Teonna Draughn out in front who scored 18 points along with 6 assists and 5 rebounds. That makes it three consecutive games in which Draughn has scored at least 25% of Cardinal Newman's points. Zara Thompson was another key contributor, dropping a double-double on 16 points and 11 rebounds.

Several Mustangs players turned in solid performances, despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Aniya Hamlett, who scored 8 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Alaina Dowling, who scored 7 points.

Cardinal Newman's win bumped their record up to 1-2. As for Midland Valley, they still haven't won a game yet this season and fell to 0-3.

Cardinal Newman will be playing in front of their home fans against Richland Northeast at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in South Carolina (Richland Northeast is ranked 96th, while Cardinal Newman is ranked 106th). As for Midland Valley, they will head out on the road to face off against Strom Thurmond at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Hopefully Strom Thurmond focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 15 on Saturday.
