Martin is 8-2 against Bowie since October of 2015 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Thursday. After each having a week off, the two teams will shake off the cobwebs and hit the field against one another at 7:00 p.m. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty point totals in their previous games.
Martin took a loss when they played away from home back in September, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed last Friday. They simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat Grand Prairie 65-6. The final result isn't all that surprising considering the Warriors' considerable advantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 145th, while the Gophers are ranked 648th).
Martin's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was ' Ty Ingram, who picked up 55 receiving yards and two scores. Speaking of playmakers, who could forget Chancellor Tealer, who went all the way with a kickoff return for a touchdown.
Special teams also played a big role in the game for Martin, adding 19 points to the final score. The biggest highlight from special teams (and perhaps the team as a whole) came courtesy of Tealer, who ran a kickoff back for a touchdown. Another bright spot was a punt return touchdown from De'Marius Hoye.
Another reason for the win was Martin's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for 4.5 sacks. Kellen Davis was especially locked on to Grand Prairie's QB and sacked him twice. Martin received some extra help from Javian Jones-Priest, whose fumble return for a touchdown made for one of the most unforgettable moments.
Meanwhile, you're bound to get a positive result if you outscore your opponent every quarter and that's exactly how it played out for Bowie last Friday. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that they blew Sam Houston out of the water with a 52-7 final score. The matchup was all but wrapped up at the end of the third, by which point the Volunteers had established a 35-point advantage.
A big part of Bowie's win came down to the chemistry between Jayden Bibbs and his top target Keidric Osunde-Brown. Bibbs threw for 241 yards and a pair of touchdowns while completing 78.3% of his passes while Osunde-Brown picked up 144 receiving yards and two TDs. What's more, Bibbs racked up 139.9 passer rating, the most he's had since back in September of 2024.
Bowie didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Galatians Paogofie and Kevin Baines. Paogofie has been hot recently, having also posted five or more total tackles the last three times he's played.
The victory made it two in a row for Bowie and bumps their season record up to 3-2. Those wins came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered a grand total of 21 points in those games. As for Martin, their record now sits at 2-3.
The upcoming game will be a clash of competing strengths. Martin has deployed a run-first offense that has averaged 225 rushing yards a game. Meanwhile, Bowie has preferred to attack from the air: they average 354.6 passing yards per game. So which strategy will prevail on Thursday? There's only one way to find out.
Martin couldn't quite get it done against Bowie in their previous matchup back in October of 2024 as they fell 34-24. Can the Warriors avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
