No. 45 La Salle needs double overtime to knock off Elder in season opener; St. Edward overcomes 10-point halftime deficit to beat Massillon Washington.

Defending Ohio Division II state champs La Salle (Cincinnati) outlasted Elder (Cincinnati) in an epic season opener Friday night at The Pit. Elder, who reached the title game in Division I last season, kicked a field goal with no time left on the clock to send the game to overtime.

After trading touchdowns in the first overtime, Elder scored on its opening possession in the second OT.

Gi'Bran Payne scored a 19-yard touchdown to make it 52-51 and then Zach Branam found the end zone for the game-winning conversion to pull out a 53-52 victory.

The national Game of the Week lived up to the hype as No. 30 St. Edward (Ohio) overcame a 20-10 halftime deficit and beat No. 50 Massillon Washington (Ohio) 24-23.

No. 27 Mentor (Ohio) won its season opener in Matt Gray's head coaching debut, beating Medina (Ohio) 37-19.

No. 35 Hoover (Ala.) improved to 2-0 with a dominant 62-0 win over Bessemer City (Ala.).

No. 14 Corner Canyon (Draper, Utah) extended its winning streak to 29 in ESPN's night cap beating Bingham (South Jordan, Utah) 42-20. Jaxson Dart had another stellar night accounting for six total touchdowns giving him 17 through the Chargers first three games.

Saturday's slate included No. 20 Thompson (Alabaster, Ala.) winning its sixth consecutive game cruising to a 39-7 win over Sparkman (Harvest, Ala.) and No. 46 Bryant (Ark.) reeled off its 18th straight victory with a dominant 48-7 win over rival Benton (Ark.) in the Salt Bowl.

No. 23 Pickerington Central (Ohio) capped of the weekend beating Pickerington North (Ohio) 35-9 on Sunday. 2021 Bowling Green commit Nick Mosley rushed for three scores and the defending Ohio Division I state champs won its 12th consecutive game dating back to last year.
