The Winfield Generals will head out on the road to take on the Riverside Warriors at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Winfield is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 35.8 points per game this season.
On Friday, Winfield came up short against Nitro and fell 39-28. While the Generals didn't get the win, they did start the game off strong, beating the Wildcats 7-3 in the first quarter.
The loss doesn't tell the whole story though, as several players had good games. One of the most active was Drew Mann, who picked up 51 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns. An impressive showing, but he really ramped things up playing D: he picked up two sacks, forced one fumble, and made eight total tackles. Aiden Tate got in on the action too, returning a kick for a touchdown.
Even if they lost, Winfield's defensive line still kept up the pressure with four sacks. The team can thank two different players for their defensive prowess: Dylan Paxton and Mann, who each picked up two sacks apiece. Another thorn in Nitro's side was Paxton, who picked up two sacks, forced one fumble, and made two total tackles.
Meanwhile, Riverside had to endure a four-game losing streak, but that streak is no more. They strolled past South Charleston with points to spare last Friday, taking the game 31-14.
Winfield better keep an eye on Tavion Woods. He was instrumental in Riverside's win, throwing for 115 yards and two TDs, while also rushing for 50 yards.
Riverside didn't let much get past them through the air: they limited South Charleston to a completion percentage of just 31.2%. The Warriors weren't nearly as limited: they posted one of 45%.
Riverside didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off three passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of John Battle and Auric Booker.
The win was their first on the road , bumping their record up to 2-6. As for Winfield, their loss dropped their record down to 5-3.
Friday's contest might be decided in the trenches. Winfield has been excellent on the ground this season, having averaged 179 rushing yards per game. It's a different story for Riverside, though, as they've been averaging only 55.5 rushing yards. How will they fare against such a dominant running game? Check back here after the action for a full breakdown and analysis of the contest.
