The Memorial Warriors are taking a road trip to challenge the Emerson Mavericks at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Memorial is no doubt hoping to put an end to an eight-game streak of away losses dating back to last season.
Memorial will head into Thursday's match on the come-up: they were handed a 60-point defeat in their previous outing, but they didn't let that bad energy affect their game against Independence last Thursday. Memorial skirted past Independence 20-17. The win was some much needed relief for the Warriors as it spelled an end to their three-game losing streak.
Memorial's defense was in the mix too, especially the secondary: they snagged two passes before it was all said and done. The picks came courtesy of Jalaal Abdullah and Austin Metcalf. Metcalf is also on a roll when it comes to total tackles, as he's now made five or more in the last ten games he's played dating back to last season. Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Emerson). They blew past Denison 45-7 on the road on Friday. The score at the end of the third wound up being the final score as the Mavericks just coasted through the last quarter.
DJ Shelton had an outrageously good game as he threw for 263 yards and three touchdowns on only 19 passes. Kelton Wafer was in the mix as well, providing Emerson with two touchdowns.
Memorial's first victory this season bumped their record up to 1-3. As for Emerson, their win bumped their record up to 3-1.
Memorial took a serious blow against Emerson when the teams last played back in October of 2023, falling 56-14. Thankfully for Memorial, Michael Hawkins (who threw for 279 yards and four touchdowns while picking up 14.0 yards per attempt, and also rushed for 106 yards and a touchdown on only five carries) won't be suiting up this time.
