Volleyball Recap: Pius X Falls Despite Big Games from Whitney Mertens and Kami Wemhoff

Pius X was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their third straight loss. They came up short against the Gretna Dragons, falling 3-0. If the Thunderbolts were looking for revenge after losing 3-1 to the Dragons when the teams met back in October of 2024, then they'll just have to keep looking.

While Pius X was not able to make it on the board, they still kept things close, especially in the second set. The match finished with set scores of 25-19, 25-23, 25-12.

Despite the defeat, Pius X had strong showings from Kami Wemhoff, who had nine digs, and Whitney Mertens, who had five digs and two aces.

Among those leading the charge was Lily Zimmerman, who had 12 digs and four assists. That's the most assists she has posted over her last eight matches.

Pius X's loss dropped their record down to 18-17. As for Gretna, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 25-6.

Pius X has already played their next matchup, a 3-0 win against Sidney on the 30th. As for Gretna, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 3-0 victory against Lincoln Northwest on the 30th.
