Softball Game Preview: Burley Bobcats vs. Wood River Wolverines

Burley is on a three-game streak of home losses, and Wood River a seven-game streak of away losses dating back to last season. However, someone's due for a change in luck on Tuesday. The Burley Bobcats will take on the Wood River Wolverines at 3:00 p.m. The contest will give Burley their first taste of in-conference action this season.

Friday just wasn't the day for Burley's offense. They came up short against Pocatello on Friday, falling 10-0. The matchup marked the first time this season in which the Bobcats were not able to get on the board.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Wood River). Everything went their way against Sugar-Salem on Saturday as they made off with a 15-7 win. The high-flying hitting performance was a huge turnaround for the Wolverines considering their two-run performance the game before.

Makinzie Nelson made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out six batters over 3.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, firing off two home runs and three runs while going 3-for-4. Those two home runs gave her a new career-high.

In other batting news, Rylee Funk was a standout: she scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-3. That's the most hits she has posted since back in April of 2024. Rebecca Atienza was another key player, scoring two runs while going 2-for-5.

Wood River always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .553. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.

Wood River's first victory this season bumped their record up to 1-7. As for Burley, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-5.
