Softball Recap: Merritt Island Comes Up Short

Merritt Island fought the good fight in their extra-innings contest against Coral Reef on Saturday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They took a 4-1 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Barracudas. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Mustangs of the 7-2 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in April of 2022.

Rindi Amos spent all eight innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three runs (all of which were unearned) on six hits and racked up ten Ks. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in ten consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Elena Rollen made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases.

This is the second loss in a row for Merritt Island and nudges their season record down to 8-10. As for Coral Reef, their win was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 14-4.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Merritt Island will take on Rockledge at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Coral Reef, they will challenge Western at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Barracudas 1.8, the Wildcats 2.1) so any runs scored will be well earned.
