Yellow Jackets win seventh state crown in school history.

The high school football season in Mississippi came to a close over the weekend. Starkville was among the winners, beating Brandon 48-32 in the Class 6A state championship game. That victory helped propel the Yellow Jackets to the No. 1 ranking in the final state MaxPreps Top 25.

Starkville (12-3) won its first state title since 2015 and seventh in school history. The Yellow Jackets were led by junior quarterback Trey Petty who threw two touchdowns and ran for three more in the championship game against Brandon, which finished the season ranked No. 3.

Coming in at No. 5 is undefeated (15-0) Picayune. The Maroon Tide defended their 2021 state championship with a 31-21 win over West Point in Class 5A.

Finishing No. 6 is Class 4A state champion Louisville. The only blemish on the Wildcats (14-1) record came at the hands of No. 1 Starkville in a 21-20 game on Sept. 16.
