Football Recap: Regis Jesuit Takes Down Ranked Mullen

Regis Jesuit faced Mullen in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Friday. The Raiders walked away with a 21-14 win over the Mustangs. The Raiders have seen this before: they got the W the last time they saw the Mustangs, too.

Regis Jesuit didn't let much get past them through the air: they limited Mullen to a completion percentage of just 43.6%. That dominant aerial defense primarily came from three players: Cade Filleman, Logan Singer, and Will Anzures, who each logged one passes deflected. That defensive display was nothing new: Regis Jesuit has limited their opponent to a lower and lower completion percentage in four consecutive contests.

Regis Jesuit didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off five passes before the game was over. Singer led the group effort, picking up three of those interceptions all by himself. Another thorn in Mullen's side was Filleman, who made 18 total tackles (1.0 for loss) and defended one pass.

When it comes to explaining why Mullen lost, don't look at Amare Kyle. Despite the final result, he picked up 86 receiving yards and two TDs.

Regis Jesuit's victory bumped their record up to 2-3. As for Mullen, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-4.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Regis Jesuit will host Chaparral at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. The Raiders will be up against the Wolverines' rather soft defense (which has allowed 38 points per game), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance. As for Mullen, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Vista PEAK Prep at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Mustangs' defense better be ready for this one: the Bison have averaged an impressive 41.6 points per game this season.
