Basketball Recap: Estes Park Takes Loss Despite Strong Performances from Phineas Smith and Hayden Powell

If Estes Park was riding high fresh off their 58-38 takedown of Belleview Christian last Tuesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Estes Park Bobcats lost to the Flatirons Academy Bison on the road by a 70-51 margin on Thursday. The Bobcats were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Bison earlier this season, when they won 52-49.

Despite the defeat, Estes Park had strong showings from Hayden Powell, who posted 19 points in addition to seven boards and four steals, and Phineas Smith, who dropped a double-double with 15 points and 16 rebounds. The game was Powell's sixth in a row with at least 15 points. Noah Webster was another key player, putting up eight points.

Flatirons Academy's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Brandon Ewing led the charge by going 11-for-26 en route to 25 points and three steals. Ewing has been hot, having posted 16 or more points the last five times he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Caleb Doughty, who had nine points along with six rebounds and five assists.

Estes Park's loss was their third straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 10-12. As for Flatirons Academy, they are on a roll lately: they've won nine of their last 11 contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 16-6 record this season.
