Baseball Recap: Watseka Find Success

It can be hard to translate regular season success to the playoffs, but Watseka had no problem doing just that on Monday. They had just enough and edged out the Hoopeston Cornjerkers 3-1. That's the second time they've managed to beat them this season, as they also won 2-1 back in April.

James Newell spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned run on four hits. He has become a key player for Watseka: the team is undefeated when he allows at most one earned run, but 8-14 otherwise.

At the plate, Watseka saw seven different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Tyler Waugh, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base.

Watseka has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six games. That's provided a nice bump to their 11-14 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.7 runs over those games. As for Hoopeston, their defeat ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 9-19.

As of now, neither Watseka nor the Cornjerkers have any future games scheduled.
