Basketball Recap: Newcomb Skyhawks vs. Navajo Prep Eagles
The Newcomb Skyhawks lost against the Navajo Prep Eagles back in February of 2023, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Friday. Newcomb was dealt a 66-36 defeat at the hands of the Eagles. Newcomb was in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 37-14.
Newcomb's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Lethia Yazzie, who scored 15 points. Nevaeh Miller was another key contributor, scoring six points along with eight rebounds and three steals.
Newcomb has traveled a rocky road recently having lost five of their last six games, which put a noticeable dent in their 9-11 record this season. As for Navajo Prep, the victory was the fifth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 12-8.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Newcomb will take on the Hawks at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are closely ranked in New Mexico (Thoreau is ranked 88th, while the Skyhawks are ranked 90th). As for Navajo Prep, they will be playing in front of their home fans against the Cougars at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Tohatchi has been dominant on offense recently, as they've racked up an incredible 254 points over their last four matches.
