Julio Cardoso was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he struck out seven batters over five innings while giving up just two earned (and two unearned) runs off two hits. That's the most strikeouts he has posted since back in February.
At the plate, Jon Mora was cooking despite his team's loss, going 1-for-3 with one home run and two RBI. That home run marked the first that he launched this season.
Meanwhile, Gulliver Prep can bid farewell to their 11-game losing streak dating back to last season thanks to their game on Thursday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 3-1 victory over Keys Gate. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Raiders have posted since April 17, 2024.
Ronin Robles spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered a run (which was unearned) on four hits. What's more, he gave up only zero earned runs, the fewest he's had since back in April of 2024.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Chase Cherne, who scored a run while going 2-for-3.
Somerset Academy now has a losing record of 6-7. As for Gulliver Prep, their victory (their first of the season) made their record 1-10.
Somerset Academy's speedy runners might be the difference in Friday's matchup. Somerset Academy has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 6.1 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Gulliver Prep, though, as they've been averaging only 1.1 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Somerset Academy continue to outrun the ball?
Somerset Academy came out on top in a nail-biter against Gulliver Prep when the teams last played back in April of 2021, sneaking past 2-1. The rematch might be a little tougher for Somerset Academy since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
