League recap: Sparks breaks off league-leading run for Randolph County

2A Region 5 recap Sept. 26, 2012

Randolph County's Ty Sparks recorded the longest rushing play in 2A Region 5 this season in his game against Reeltown last week. Sparks' team lost to the Rebels as he sprinted for 12 yards on the play and finished with 35 in all.

Horseshoe Bend was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from eighth to fourth in the league. The Generals defeated Isabella 61-33 earlier in the week.

Horseshoe Bend's dynamic duo of Chase Cheaney and Corey Glenn proved tough for the Mustangs to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Cheaney threw for 154 yards and one touchdown and Glenn had 85 yards receiving. Jordan Funderburk helped Horseshoe Bend's passing attack out by catching two balls for 25 yards.

Tywone Stewart was the most productive running back in the league this week. In 10 carries, he ran for 150 yards as Reeltown beat Isabella. James Smith also contributed to the rushing game with 39 yards on the ground.

Randolph County's Sparks and Brad Benefield have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading 2A Region 5 in both passing and receiving yards. Sparks has thrown for 766 yards this season, while Benefield, a 6-foot-1 receiver, has 19 catches for 313 yards. The Generals' Cory Battle leads the league in rushing yards with 718.

Horseshoe Bend moved up to 133 from 223 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. A 61-33 win over Lanny Jones's team helped the Generals improve their standing.
