Baseball Recap: La Joya Community Drops Highest Score of Season Against Kellis

La Joya Community scored the most runs they've had this season on Thursday, but it wasn't enough. They took a 15-10 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Kellis Cougars. The Fighting Lobos were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Cougars apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in April of 2024.

Dominik Garcia put in work no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out eight batters over three innings while giving up just two earned (and three unearned) runs off five hits (and not a single walk). He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up a single walk in four consecutive appearances. He was even better at the plate, scoring two runs while going 4-for-4. That's the most runs he has posted since back in April of 2024.

In other batting news, Gavino Bustamante was cooking despite his team's loss, going 1-for-3 with two stolen bases, one triple, and one run. Those stolen bases were his first of the season. The team also got some help courtesy of Aidan Escobedo, who scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-4.

Even though they lost, La Joya Community always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .513. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their OBP total in three consecutive contests.

La Joya Community's loss dropped their record down to 2-4. As for Kellis, their win ended a five-game drought at home dating back to last season and bumped them up to 2-4.

Coming up, La Joya Community will take on Youngker at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. La Joya Community has given up an average of 9.3 runs per game this season, so hopefully the team got some pitching drills in this week. As for Kellis, they will square off against North Canyon at 3:45 p.m. on Friday. North Canyon will roll in looking for their fifth straight victory, something Kellis surely won't give up without a fight.
