Basketball Recap: South Johnston Trojans vs. Smithfield-Selma Spartans
South Johnston was the 60-43 winner over Smithfield-Selma when they last played one another back in February, but their luck changed this time around. The Trojans took a 60-51 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Spartans on Friday. The Trojans were down 44-24 at the end of the third quarter, which was just too much to recover from.
Despite the loss, South Johnston still got an impressive performance from Walker Johnson, who went 6-for-12 en route to 19 points. Another player making a difference was Gabe Patrick, who posted 13 points.
Smithfield-Selma's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Shi'Quavis Benton led the charge by as he made all 5 shots he took to post 18 points. Benton has also also been stellar as far as field goal percentage is concerned: he's posted one of at least 75% every time he's hit the court this season. Johnavon Cox was another key player, putting up ten points and six rebounds.
South Johnston's defeat dropped their record down to 1-1. As for Smithfield-Selma, their victory ended a nine-game drought at home dating back to last season and bumped them up to 2-1.
South Johnston wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next matchup, a 56-44 loss against Princeton on the 3rd. As for Smithfield-Selma, they have also already played their next game, a 43-37 win against North Johnston on the 25th.
