Football Recap: Athens Academy Picks Up Fifth Consecutive Win + How To Watch

Athens Academy won the last time they faced Oglethorpe County and things went their way on Friday too. The Spartans were the clear victors by a 43-21 margin over the Patriots. The final result isn't all that surprising considering the Spartans' considerable advantage in MaxPreps' Georgia football rankings (they are ranked 124th, while the Patriots are ranked 304th).

A big part of Athens Academy's victory came down to the chemistry between Chap Chapman and his top target Keyon Standifer. Chapman threw for 237 yards and three TDs on only 12 passes while Standifer gained 161 total yards and five touchdowns. The dominant performance also gave Chapman a new career-high in rushing yards (58).

Special teams was a major factor in the game for Athens Academy, racking up 11 points in total. The biggest highlight from special teams (and perhaps the team as a whole) came courtesy of Standifer, who ran a punt back for a touchdown.

When it comes to explaining why Oglethorpe County lost, don't look at O'Maury Huggs. Despite the final result, he rushed for 88 yards and one score on only five carries. Huggs' longest rush was for an impressive 50 yards, which helps to explain his lofty yards per carry total.

The win was the fifth in a row for Athens Academy, bringing their record up to 5-1. Those victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 38.4 points over those games. As for Oglethorpe County, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 2-4.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Athens Academy will host Banks County at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The Spartans will be up against the Leopards' rather soft defense (which has allowed 35.4 points per contest), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance. As for Oglethorpe County, they will get a bit of extra time to process the loss as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Rabun County at 7:30 p.m. on October 10.
