South El Monte blew Gabrielino out of the water the last time the pair played, but on Friday Gabrielino got their revenge. South El Monte fell just short of Gabrielino by a score of 30-28. South El Monte's defeat signaled the end of their four-game winning streak.

Despite the loss, South El Monte still got an impressive performance from Michael Maldonado, who rushed for 101 yards on only seven carries, and also threw for 191 yards and one touchdown. Maldonado's longest rush was for an impressive 56 yards, which helps to explain his lofty yards per carry total.

Alijah Sheppard was his usual excellent self, rushing for 177 yards and a pair of TDs while picking up 9.3 yards per carry for Gabrielino. Those 177 rushing yards gave Sheppard a new career-high. Marelle Moore Jr. also deserves a mention for his punt return touchdown.

South El Monte's loss was their first in the league, dropping their league record down to 2-1 and their overall record down to 4-3. As for Gabrielino, the victory was the fifth in a row for them, bringing their record up to 6-1.

South El Monte has already played their next matchup, a 28-14 win against Rosemead on the 9th. As for Gabrielino, they will get to enjoy the win for a while: their next game is against Arroyo at 7:00 p.m. on the 17th.
