Softball Recap: Maryvale Comes Up Short

On Thursday, the Maryvale Panthers didn't have quite enough to beat the Independence Patriots and fell 4-3.

Isabel Hernandez was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 16 batters over six innings while giving up just one earned (and three unearned) runs off four hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two walks any time she's pitched this season. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-2 with two stolen bases and one RBI.

Hernandez wasn't the only one making solid contact as three players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Gianna Ramos, who went 1-for-2 with two stolen bases and one RBI. Another was Ivette Hernandez Mojica, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-4.

Maryvale suffered their first road loss, dropping their record down to 4-2. As for Independence, their win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 3-0.

Maryvale will get a bit of extra time to process the defeat as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Westwood at 3:45 p.m. on March 20th. Independence also won't see the field for a while: their next matchup is against Copper Canyon at 3:45 p.m. on March 25th.
