Basketball Preview: Onaga Buffaloes vs. Doniphan West Mustangs
Onaga has enjoyed a three-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They will face off against the Doniphan West Mustangs at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Given that both teams suffered a loss in their last game, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this matchup.
Last Friday, Onaga took a serious blow against the Rams, falling 80-48. Onaga has not had much luck with the Rams recently, as the team's come up short the last four times they've met.
Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the best came from Konnor Nider, who scored 16 points along with two steals. He is on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in the last four games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Jackson Kolterman, who scored ten points along with seven steals and five assists.
Even though they lost, Onaga were working as a unit and finished the game with 16 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.
Meanwhile, Doniphan West's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Friday after their third straight loss. They were dealt a 62-28 defeat at the hands of Clifton-Clyde. While losing is never fun, Doniphan West can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Kansas basketball rankings (they are ranked 305th, while the Eagles are ranked 35th).
Onaga dropped their record down to 1-13 with that loss, which was their fifth straight at home. As for Doniphan West, their loss dropped their record down to 3-12.
Onaga skirted past the Mustangs 40-38 in their previous meeting back in February of 2023. The rematch might be a little tougher for Onaga since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
