Basketball Game Preview: Fairmont Firebirds vs. Springboro Panthers

Fairmont is 2-8 against Springboro since January of 2021 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Wednesday. The Firebirds will venture away from home to face off against the Panthers at 7:30 p.m. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Fairmont comes in on four and Springboro on five.

Fairmont is headed into the matchup after thoroughly thrashing Wayne: they outscored them in every quarter. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that the Firebirds blew the Warriors out of the water with a 62-23 final score. The Firebirds pushed the score to 57-19 by the end of the third, a deficit the Warriors had no chance of recovering from.

Fairmont's success was spearheaded by the efforts of Kaylah Thorton, who went 9-for-15 on her way to 26 points in addition to five rebounds and three steals, and Janiyah Hargrave, who dropped a double-double with 16 points and 11 boards. The game was Hargrave's fourth in a row with at least 16 points. Another player making a difference was Peyton Adams, who posted six points and three steals.

Fairmont smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 16 offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive boards they've managed all season.

Meanwhile, it was a proper cat-fight when Springboro challenged Springfield on Saturday. The Panthers put the hurt on the Wildcats with a sharp 57-34 victory. The Panthers have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won five contests by 23 points or more this season.

Fairmont's record is now 4-0. As for Springboro, their record now sits at 5-1.

Fairmont was able to grind out a solid win over Springboro in their previous meeting back in January, winning 51-43. Do the Firebirds have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Panthers turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
