League recap: Belle Vernon climbs in state rankings with win

WPIAL AAA Big Nine recap Oct. 16, 2012

Belle Vernon moved up to 334 from 406 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in WPIAL AAA Big Nine. The Leopards were able to make the jump by losing to Thomas Jefferson 57-20.

West Mifflin extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating Indiana, 29-0. The victory was the seventh in a row for the team.

The Jaguars' offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Joe Carroll threw for 376 and five touchdowns and Zach Schademan had 247 yards receiving. On the ground Jamison Opfar chipped in 81 yards. Jake Mascaro helped Thomas Jefferson's passing attack out by catching five balls for 59 yards.

Thomas Jefferson's Carroll and Schademan have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Carroll has thrown for 1490 yards this season, while Schademan, a 5-foot-11 receiver, has 42 catches for 809 yards. James Wheeler from West Mifflin leads the league in rushing with 1202 yards.

A big matchup in WPIAL AAA Big Nine this week will be when Trinity takes on Ray Braszo's team. The Hillers are currently in third, while the Titans are in first.

Bill Cherpak's team took down Belle Vernon 57-20 last week, the largest margin of any game. Carroll ran for four yards in the win.
