High school basketball: Grayson Rigdon, Kedrick Simmons headline Preseason Small Town All-Americans

By Kevin Askeland Nov 20, 2024, 3:00pm

Nation's leading scorer from a year ago has switched schools but expect the points to keep piling up.

Grayson Rigdon, high school basketball's leading scorer last year at 45.1 points per game, made the Small Town All-America Team as a junior while leading Benjamin to the Class 1A state championship game in Texas.

That won't happen this year due to the fact that Rigdon has transferred to play over 400 miles away at Columbus (Texas). Also a six-man football player at Strawn (Texas) and then Benjamin, Rigdon is considered by some to be the greatest player in state history at that level with a 45-0 record in three seasons.

In his season opener at Columbus and 11-man debut, Rigdon rushed for 255 yards and three touchdowns. His efforts have helped the Cardinals to a 10-1 record.

Rigdon's basketball season will be on hold until Columbus completes its playoff run. He will return to the hardwood with 2,577 career points, including 1,083 last year.
