Basketball Recap: Sandoval Blackhawks vs. Father McGivney Catholic Griffins
Sandoval played a tough matchup on Monday in which they were outscored in every quarter. They had to suffer through a 55-22 loss at the hands of the Father McGivney Catholic Griffins. The Blackhawks have struggled against the Griffins recently, as the game was their third consecutive lost matchup.
Sandoval got a good chunk of their points from the dynamic duo of Maddie Starr and Amiya Ray, who each put up eight points. Ray also led the team in rebounds with 11. Jenna Howell took the lead distributing the ball, coming up with two assists.
Father McGivney Catholic's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Layla Tobin, who went 5-for-10 en route to 14 points and five assists. That's the most points Tobin has posted since back in December of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Devin Ellis, who put up six points in addition to eight rebounds and five assists.
Sandoval's defeat dropped their record down to 16-10. As for Father McGivney Catholic, they are on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five games, which provided a nice bump to their 17-10 record this season.
Sandoval wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, a 43-34 win against Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City on the 4th. As for Father McGivney Catholic, they have also already played their next match, a 48-44 loss against Collinsville on the 5th.
