The San Ysidro Cougars will take on the Southwest SD Raiders at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday. San Ysidro is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 14.6 runs per game this season.
San Ysidro is headed into Thursday's matchup looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their third straight game on Tuesday. They fell 9-6 to Sweetwater.
Lizette Herrera made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 3-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Mary Ellen Valenzuela, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Southwest SD, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Wednesday. They put the hurt on Castle Park with a sharp 18-5 win on Tuesday. The Raiders might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won eight games by six runs or more this season.
Daniela Nieto was a major factor no matter where she played. She tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Nieto was even better at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three RBI, one triple, and one stolen base.
In other batting news, Southwest SD got a massive performance out of Baila Mu?oz, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs and three doubles. Those four hits gave Mu?oz a new career-high. Janelle Shippley was another key player, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI.
Southwest SD was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .829. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .346 or higher in 11 consecutive contests.
San Ysidro's defeat dropped their record down to 11-8. As for Southwest SD, their victory was their first in the league, bumping their league record up to 1-2 and their overall record up to 9-6.
Southwest SD's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: San Ysidro has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 12.2 hits per game. It's a different story for Southwest SD, though, as they've been averaging 8.8 hits. Given San Ysidro's sizable advantage in that area, the Raiders will need to find a way to close that gap.
