Baseball Game Preview: Springfield Cosmos vs. Woodstock Wasps

The Springfield Cosmos are taking a road trip to challenge the Woodstock Wasps at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. The squads are rolling into the game with opposing streaks: Springfield has struggled recently with six defeats in a row, while Woodstock will arrive with three straight victories.

Springfield lost 14-1 to Bellows Falls on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Woodstock was able to grind out a solid win over West Rutland on Tuesday, taking the game 11-6.

Riley O'Neal and Drew Gallagher made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, O'Neal tossed three innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off two hits. Meanwhile, Gallagher struck out seven batters over four innings while giving up four earned runs off three hits. At bat, O'Neal went 1-for-4 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run, while Gallagher got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one run.

In other batting news, Benjamin Runstein was incredible, going 1-for-4 with four stolen bases and two runs. Those four stolen bases gave him a new career-high. Jake Blackburn was another key player, going 1-for-3 with three stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI.

Woodstock's victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 3-0. The road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they've averaged 7.7 runs this season. As for Springfield, their loss dropped their record down to 0-4.

Springfield suffered a grim 17-5 defeat to Woodstock when the teams last played back in May of 2024. Can the Cosmos avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
