Baseball Game Preview: Whitney Young Dolphins vs. Taft Eagles

The Whitney Young Dolphins will head out to take on the Taft Eagles at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Whitney Young managed to slip by Payton College Prep the last time these teams faced off, but didn't have those same answers this time around. The Dolphins lost 12-4 to the Grizzlies on Tuesday. Surprisingly, this marked the Dolphins' sixth straight game in which the away team has come away the victor.

Whitney Young saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Luke Yolich, who went 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI.

Meanwhile, Taft beat Ogden International 9-5 on Tuesday.

Joe Falkowski looked comfortable as he struck out nine batters over four innings while giving up just two earned (and two unearned) runs off four hits (and only one walk). Those nine strikeouts gave him a new career-high.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Israel Rodriguez, who went 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Taft's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 7-3 (and 5-8 when he doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Danny Marr, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one run and one RBI.

Taft is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 12-11 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.0 runs over those games. As for Whitney Young, their defeat ended a four-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 11-12.

Everything went Whitney Young's way against Taft in their previous meeting back in April of 2024, as Whitney Young made off with a 15-4 victory. Will the Dolphins repeat their success, or do the Eagles have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
