Football Game Preview: Santa Maria Cougars vs. Premont Cowboys

The Santa Maria Cougars will head out on the road to face off against the Premont Cowboys at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.

Santa Maria will bounce into Friday's matchup after beating Three Rivers, who they had gone 0-5 against in their five prior meetings. The Cougars blew past the Bulldogs 56-29 on Friday. The victory was nothing new for the Cougars as they're now sitting on three straight.

Daniel Martinez continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, rushing for 397 yards and six scores while picking up 13.2 yards per carry. Those 397 rushing yards gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Luis Otero, who picked up 26 receiving yards and one touchdown.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: Santa Maria was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 443 rushing yards. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their rushing yard total in three consecutive contests.

Santa Maria didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Andre De La Rosa and Otero.

Meanwhile, after only six points in their last game, Premont made sure to put some points up on the board against Kaufer on Thursday. The Cowboys claimed a resounding 50-20 win over the Seahawks. The Cowboys haven't had any issues with the Seahawks recently, as the game was their seventh consecutive victory against them.

The win got Premont back to even at 4-4. As for Santa Maria, their record is now 6-3.

Santa Maria took their victory against Premont in their previous meeting back in November of 2024 by a conclusive 35-12 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Cougars since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
