Softball Preview: Fairfield Falcons vs. Foothill Mustangs

Fairfield has gone a perfect 4-0 against Foothill recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Wednesday. The Falcons will look to defend their home field against the Mustangs at 4:00 p.m. Fairfield is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.8 runs per game this season.

Fairfield is coming in off a wild two-game stretch: after soaring to 15 runs on Friday, they were much more limited against West Campus on Monday. They lost 11-1 to the Warriors.

Karli Robinson put in work while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out nine batters over 5.1 innings while giving up three earned (and eight unearned) runs off six hits (and only one walk). She has been consistent: she hasn't tossed less than nine strikeouts any time she's pitched this season. She was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in all three of her plate appearances with one RBI.

Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Foothill, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Thursday. They put the hurt on Armijo with a sharp 22-3 win on Friday. Considering the Mustangs have won six matchups by more than ten runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.

Like Fairfield, Foothill also got a great game from a two-way player: Mercede Averett. She didn't allow a single earned run while striking out nine over five innings pitched. Averett was even better at the plate, firing off two home runs, eight RBI, and four runs while going 3-for-4. Those two home runs gave her a new career-high.

In other batting news, Julianne Esquibel was a standout: she went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, three runs, and two doubles. Another player making a difference was Chloe Vaca, who went 1-for-3 with four stolen bases, two runs, and one double.

Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
