Softball Game Preview: Pass Christian Pirates vs. Lawrence County Cougars

The Pass Christian Pirates will take on the Lawrence County Cougars at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Each of these teams will be battling to keep a four-game winning streak alive.

On Friday, Pass Christian needed a bit of extra time to put away Mendenhall. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the Tigers, sneaking past 5-4.

Meanwhile, it can be hard to translate regular season success to the playoffs, but Lawrence County had no problem doing just that on Friday. They never let the Aggies get on the board and left with a 14-0 victory. The result was nothing new for the Cougars, who have now won 12 contests by six runs or more so far this season.

Marleigh Grace Russell was a major factor no matter where she played. She didn't allow a single earned run while striking out eight over five innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 17 consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with two RBI.

In other batting news, Lawrence County let Addie Raye Pennington and GG Sanders run wild. Pennington went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI, while Sanders went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI. That's the most stolen bases Sanders has posted since back in March of 2024. MyMy Peyton was another key player, earning three runs and two stolen bases.

Lawrence County kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their hit total in three consecutive matchups.

Pass Christian pushed their record up to 17-9 with the win, which was their fifth straight at home. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.4 runs on average over those games. As for Lawrence County, their record is now 18-11.

Pass Christian might still be hurting after the 12-2 defeat they got from Lawrence County in their previous meeting back in April of 2015. Can the Pirates avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
